“You may have heard about a legend about a technological innovation dated 400 years ago. But no one gets to know the whole picture.” Hearing this, many from the audience start to lend their ears. Some of them were told about it since they were born. Now they grow too old to even remember what a server is. Some have always been trying to reveal the true story but in vain. Now, the whole venue is enjoying the quiet atmosphere as the audience gives their full attention.
“Ethanim comes from 400 years ago.”
“As I’ve mentioned just now, Ethanim is a highly inclusive metaverse technology. It allows free competition for resources and users among technologies. This may sound normal to us but was indeed a pioneering endeavor in that era when decentralization has not been completely achieved. It is on top of their strenuous efforts that the society we now live in can boom and prosper with these brilliant, convenient virtual devices.”
“But do you know that Ethanim is only a tip of the iceberg? Besides, Ethanim is still alive.”
“Alive? How is it possible?” Shouts some hysteric voice.
“How can a machine have a life?”
“Liar! Get down!”
“He must be lying. How can a legend be unveiled this easily?”
…
The audience outburst with shock and doubt. The old professor, however, answers calmly as he has already expected the reaction.
“That is true. He’s alive and he’s around you.”
The audience is rendered into an even deeper craze. Some look around in puzzlement; some descend into deep thought; some stand up and shout out swear words. They find it hard to absorb this finding.
The professor makes a shushing gesture and carries on with much excitement.
“Some of you here may have heard of the theory of the flock organism on earth. Now, I can tell you that Ethanim is a part of a certain organism, which is still alive today. Every one of us and every electronic device in this world forms a part of this organism. Together we compose the whole organism, called NetX. NetX is a legend from 400 years ago.”
“NetX? What is it?”
“I’ve never heard of it. Is it food?”
“I’ve seen the word on the old device owned by my grandfather. I thought it was a spelling mistake.”
“Our times doesn’t know NetX much. So, it is normal for you to feel confused. NetX is a living organism that witnesses the birth of basic codes and applications and the display of the metaverse, even the whole social ecology, through physical visualization. He is the first man-made out-of-control swarm organism that ever exists on earth. As his name suggests, he is a swarm composed of numerous network nodes. He is the pioneer of the post-IT era. Starting from a small foundation, he was built to develop fully decentralized applications and even to form a wholly ecological organism of the metaverse. The goal took him 200 years to achieve. Today’s post-IT era derives merely from their fantasy for the future. They had no idea what that would evolve into. But that underpins the significance of this organism they created. Let it run with it. The flock will eventually exist in a better state.”
Having said that, the professor is overwhelmed with exhilaration. He is thrilled to show what he has witnessed about that remarkable period to the world. He is eager to hail the outstanding contributions and advanced thoughts of our ancestors through his speech. This once-in-a-lifetime chance and opportunity can never be bought with money. This is where his aspiration and enthusiasm always lie. That also explains why he spends half of his life trying to reveal that history.
