It is the year 2422. The revelation of E’s story has brought unparalleled fame and money to the old professor and his two interns. A week after the earthshaking news is released, they are invited to the world’s most significant award ceremony, where they deliver a keynote speech on their experiment.
The old professor in a vintage suit and an antique tan hat, stands in the middle of the grand venue, next to the pair of goggles the man in the video wore and an electronic device with massive data inside. The virtual video of him giving a passionate speech with various gestures is aired worldwide.
“E bears the original full name of Ethanim AR. His documented name is so blurry after hundreds of years of decay. We can only vaguely identify the character E. Written copies inside the machine show that AR is abbreviated for Augmented Reality. AR is a kind of technology that allows an insight into the virtual world through head-mounted wearables. All human-computer interactions(HCI) are referred to as Ethniam. That era has witnessed the peak times for AR-facilitated HCI. That’s also how Ethanim AR got its name.”
“HCI modes dated to 400 years old, long before the popularization of AR technology and other physical devices. The primary concept was still at sea to find the right carrier. The field had no clue whether it would be carried by AR or other virtual devices, let alone the devices our audience is now wearing. People in that era would envision a future of interactions between humans and physical devices. They named that future Metaverse.”
“Ethanim AR is the metaverse that operates on AR devices. Ethanim is inclusive enough to allow the growth and competition of various technologies on it. Many metaverses choose to include Ethanim at the beginning of their names. We don’t know if the technology was chosen by users or the times. We just know that AR is the one that wins in the end.”
“After 200 years of development, AR eventually risks elimination as competition pushes. Data indicates that the constantly put-forward decentralization proposal was backed by nearly 90% of the voters one month before the shutdown. The last few centralized institutions, mostly labs, were also forced to close off. All the data and several AR devices were sealed in that machine. Strong multi-level algorithm encryption stood secure for that era, as the computing power was still restrained. In such a way, centralization supporters that attempt to seize centralized power and user data through decryption were warded off. This marks the thorough collapse of a centralized society and the birth of a decentralized one.”
“We live in a decentralized era. It may be hard for us to imagine what a centralized world looks like in a short time. Decentralization was not fully but at least 90% was achieved 200 years ago. Centralized enterprises found only narrow space to exist. The Ethanim AR we just mentioned was one of them. The company stored all private information and data of AR users in a server around some corner under the company building, which seems surprising to us. Today, it is beyond the cognitive limit even for the elderly. If someone asks them about a server, they will assume that you are crazy. And that’s the same feeling of most people in our times. No one knows or wants to know that unbelievably outdated era. And that explains why the machine remains in hibernation for such a long time.”
At the moment, the professor still maintains a calm profile, not a bit like a fogey who has just solved a historical puzzle unsolved for hundreds of years. But for the stories coming up, even the well-informed professor cannot conceal his excitement.
