On October 9th, the Triathon NFT Storytelling Contest was launched. The community made a huge effort and over 70 stories have been submitted in the contest. Today, we are sharing one of the many fascinating NFT stories. Enjoy the read :)
Disease & Destiny
by Lance & Crew (Father & Son)
Note from the authors: This is just the beginning of an epic tale that follows our main characters Tenari, Renfar and Wiston (starship pilots) from their home world of Sheeshish in the Triangulum Galaxy to the Milky Way. Desperate times have called for desperate measures as these heroes embark on an unprecedented journey in hopes to save their dying planet.
Prologue:
As I exited the pre-launch prep building, one of the sick walked toward me. Eyes gaunt, hair falling out… he looked to be in stage four. Next he would be bed-ridden with no coherent thoughts. I felt sick inside knowing he would be dead by the time I returned along with millions of others. If we ever got back, that is. I had told Renfar the journey would be dangerous and that we needed to just gather the healthy and abandon the planet. Although I would miss Sheshish, the planet would be nearly impossible to save, and we could start over in the nearby Tegari system. Our tests from a decade earlier had shown that it could sustain life. It wouldn’t be the same, but it was a better bet than what we were about to attempt.
Uncharted space between galaxies was not something to venture into lightly. Sure, we had telescope imagery, drone footage and samples. We had pieced together a theoretical map of the trench space between Triangulum and the Milky Way. We also had consistent communication with leaders from several of the inhabitable planets in the Milky Way, but actually going there was a different story.
The journey would take months just to reach the edge of the Triangulum Galaxy. Then we would spend at least a month in the trench before emerging on the other side at the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. Our rendezvous point with the humans from Earth was eight luxadoms further. Altogether the journey would take about six-months one direction without any complications.
There were more sick people coming out of the buildings around me, and gathering in the street. They weren’t malicious… just scared, and looking for help. They knew the Galarium Association insignia on my shirt meant I was a starship pilot, and that the only potential hope we had for a cure would come from the Milky Way. I would have been terrified, but knew my space suit would filter out the virus. Nearly this entire city would soon need to be burned to stop the spread. We were the only healthy people within miles of the launchpads.
A shout broke out from the crowd. I could tell some kind of dispute had started, and took off in a run. I didn’t know what it was, but didn’t want to stick around to find out. A loud BANG! from my left startled me as the sick man that was chasing me rebounded off the transparent shield protecting the launchpad from any unauthorized personnel.
“Don’t abandon us!” he yelled.
I ran into the ship and into the pilot seat. My heart was pounding, but I was off safe… seconds later I was flying through a beautiful, quiet night into the black expanse of space. It seemed cruelly peaceful. I did feel like I was abandoning the sick and yet I was the only hope for Sheshish to have a future. The sick were already dead.
“I’m in the air” I radioed to the rest of the fleet “#4426 reporting for duty.”
“Good” Renfar responded “Now get over here, Tenari. We’re ready to jump to hyperdrive as soon as the Delusionist Octopus is connected to the rest of the fleet.”
“Copy” I said.
As the radio went silent once more, I entered weightless space, and the poem my daughter had written me floated out of my pocket.
To: Mommy
Save The World
My mommy is off to the Milky Way
To save the world and save the day
When she gets back I will be eight
I hope that she won’t be too late
The news guy says our world will end
He showed a graph of the sickness trend
In one year we’ll all be sick
But I know mom will be the trick
So fly, mom, fly! Off to the stars
Off to unknown places far
Find the cure and don’t be long
I’ll wait to hear more bedtime songs
I wish you didn’t have to go
I know each day will pass so slow
I’ll miss you lots, but try to be brave
I know our world has to be saved
I couldn’t help the tears that started flowing and drifting around the cockpit. I couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing Charie again. She was my whole world… but that’s exactly why I had to go. And I knew I would have the most epic bedtime stories to tell her, if we made it back!
